Business networking & referrals glossary
Plain-language definitions of the terms used in business networking and referral marketing.
- Business networking
- The practice of building relationships with other business owners and professionals to exchange information, opportunities and referrals. It can happen in person or online, and for small businesses it is one of the most cost-effective ways to find new customers.
- Business referral
- A recommendation in which one person introduces a potential customer to a business they trust. Because the prospect arrives pre-vetted by someone they know, referred customers typically convert faster and cost less to acquire than leads from advertising.
- Referral networking
- A structured form of business networking focused specifically on giving and receiving referrals. Members build trust over time and deliberately pass qualified leads to one another, often within a defined group or circle.
- Structured networking
- Referral networking organised around clear rules and rhythm — a defined membership, regular meetings, roles, and an expectation that members actively pass referrals — as opposed to casual, ad-hoc networking. The structure creates accountability that produces more consistent results.
- Networking circle
- A small group of non-competing business owners who meet regularly to exchange referrals and support each other's growth. Typically each business category is represented once, so every member becomes the group's trusted go-to for their service. On NRG Circle, a circle can be started or joined for free.
- Referral tracking
- Recording the referrals a business gives and receives and following each through its stages — introduced, in progress and closed — including the value of business won. Referral tracking turns networking from guesswork into a measurable channel.
- Closed business
- A referral that results in a completed sale or signed deal. The total closed business generated is the clearest measure of a referral network's value to its members.
- Word-of-mouth marketing
- Customers and contacts promoting a business through personal recommendation rather than paid advertising. Referral networking is a deliberate way to amplify word of mouth.
- Verified business
- A business whose identity has been checked — on NRG Circle, via GST or Udyam details and moderation — and marked with a badge that signals trustworthiness to customers and fellow members.
- One-to-one meeting
- A short, focused meeting between two members of a networking circle to understand each other's business in depth, so they can refer each other more effectively. A staple of structured referral networking.
- Visitor
- A guest who attends a networking circle's meeting without being a member, to experience the group before deciding to join. Visitor management — invites, check-in and follow-up — is a normal part of running a circle.
- SME / MSME
- Small, and micro/small/medium enterprises — the small businesses that make up the large majority of India's economy. NRG Circle is built specifically for SME and MSME owners.
