How to get your business verified in India

GSTIN, Udyam and a verified badge — what each one proves, and how to show it to customers.

To get your business verified in India, start with the registrations that prove it exists: a GSTIN if you are registered under GST, or an Udyam registration if you are an MSME. Then put that proof where customers look. On NRG Circle, Premium members can add a GSTIN or Udyam number to their business profile and earn a ✔︎ verified badge once it has been checked. A badge shows that a business is registered and active — it does not, on its own, say anything about quality.

Why customers look for proof that you are real

Anyone can create an online profile, claim a business name and post a few photos. A new customer deciding whether to send an advance or hand over a job is really asking one question: does this business actually exist, and will it still be here next month?

A verified registration answers that question quickly. It does not replace reviews — reviews tell people how you work — but it removes the first doubt, which is often the one that stops an enquiry from becoming a conversation.

The two registrations that matter for most small businesses

Most Indian small businesses can prove their identity with one of two numbers. Rules and thresholds change, so always confirm the current position on the official government portals before relying on any summary, including this one.

  • GSTIN — a 15-character number given to businesses registered under GST. The first two digits are the state code, the next ten are the PAN of the registered person or entity, and the last character is a check character. Its status (for example active or cancelled) can be looked up on the GST portal.
  • Udyam registration — the government’s registration for micro, small and medium enterprises, done online on the official Udyam portal. The number looks like UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. Registration on the official portal is free, so be wary of agents who charge for it.

How to check a GSTIN yourself

Whether you are verifying your own number or a supplier’s, the same quick checks apply:

  • Count the characters — a GSTIN has exactly 15.
  • Check that the first two digits match the state the business operates from.
  • Check that characters 3 to 12 are a valid-looking PAN that matches the business or its owner.
  • Search the number on the taxpayer search tool on the GST portal and confirm the status is active.
  • Compare the legal or trade name shown there with the name the business uses publicly.

Make the proof visible

A GSTIN is public information, and it already appears on every tax invoice you issue. Showing it on your website footer, quotations and business profile costs you nothing and signals that you are a registered, accountable business.

Keep the name consistent. If your registration says one thing and your profile says another, customers (and any automated checks) will hesitate. Never share passwords, OTPs or Aadhaar details to ‘get verified’ — a genuine check only needs the registration number.

Getting the ✔︎ badge on NRG Circle

On NRG Circle the verified badge is a Premium feature. From your profile settings you add a GSTIN or Udyam number. A GSTIN is checked against the GST registry: if it is active and the registered name matches your business name, the badge is added straight away. Udyam numbers are reviewed by the NRG Circle team. One registration can verify only one account, so a number cannot be borrowed by someone else.

The ✔︎ appears on your public profile while your Premium is active. The verification itself stays saved, so if Premium lapses and you come back, the badge returns without checking again. Remember what it means: this business is registered and active. Pair it with real customer reviews and a complete profile for the full trust signal.

Key takeaways

  • A GSTIN or Udyam registration is the simplest proof that a business exists
  • You can check a GSTIN yourself on the GST portal in a minute
  • Udyam registration on the official portal is free — avoid paying agents
  • Keep your registered name and public name consistent
  • A verified badge shows registration, not quality — pair it with reviews

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a GSTIN and an Udyam number?

A GSTIN identifies a business registered under GST and is used on tax invoices. An Udyam number is the registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. A business can have one, both, or neither depending on its size and activity — confirm current requirements on the official portals.

Can I get a verified badge on NRG Circle without a GSTIN?

Yes. You can apply with an Udyam number instead. GSTINs are checked automatically against the GST registry; Udyam numbers are reviewed by the NRG Circle team.

Does a verified badge guarantee a business is good?

No. It shows that the business is registered and active, nothing more. Quality and reliability are better judged from genuine customer reviews, which is why the badge works best alongside them.
